Maharashtra Public Service Commission conducts the examination in three stages

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Educational Qualification
- Applicants must possess a Bachelor’s degree/ Master’s degree in any discipline from a recognized institution.
- A diploma of a minimum of 3 years duration in any stream can also apply
- He/she must be efficient in Marathi
Age Limits
- The lower age limit is 19 years and the upper age limit is 38 years for the General
- Age relaxation would be applicable for reserved categories as per government It is given as follows.

Prelims
There are major changes in the Preliminary exam since 2013. Now there are 2 papers for the Preliminary exam-
- General Studies (GS)
- Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT ) carrying 200 marks for each paper.
GS paper contains 100 questions and CSAT paper contains 80 questions of multiple choice type. The time allotted is two hours for each paper. For both, the papers 1/4 negative marking system is applicable, which means a deduction of 25% marks for each wrong answer.
All other rules regarding this are same as UPSC. Questions are set in English and Marathi medium but for some passages in CSAT paper and questions based on them which are supposed to test candidates’ knowledge of the Marathi language, the English translation is not available and vice a versa.
The Preliminary Examination is held at most of the district places in Maharashtra.The authorities release the MPSC answer key for Prelims soon after the exam. After the result of the Preliminary Examination is declared, the successful candidates are called to appear for the Main Examination. Marks scored in the Preliminary Examination are not counted for the final selection of the candidates.

- History of India (specifically Maharashtra) and Indian National Movement.
- India, Maharashtra and world geography – Physical, Social, The economic geography of Maharashtra, India, and the World.
- General issues on Environmental Biodiversity, Ecology, and Climate Change.
- Polity and Governance (Maharashtra and India) – Constitution, Urban Governance, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issue, etc.
- Current events of state, national, and international importance.
- General Science
- Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Inclusion, Poverty, Social Sector Initiatives, Demographics, etc.
- Comprehension
- Logical reasoning and analytical ability
- Decision-making and problem-solving
- General mental ability
- Interpersonal skills, including communication skills
- Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data Interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc. – Class X level)
- Marathi and English language comprehension skills (Class X/XII level) Questions relating to this will be tested through passages from Marathi and the English language without providing cross translation thereof in the question paper
Mains
The Main Examination is supposed to be held three and a half or four months after the result of the Prelims exam is declared. This examination is held at four centers viz. Mumbai, Pune, Aurangabad, and Nagpur. The candidates who qualify in the Preliminarily Examination and hold University degrees of graduation level are eligible to appear for Main Examination. From 2012 MPSC state services Mains there have been seen changes. The optional subjects have been removed from the exam and 4 papers for General Studies have been introduced.
MPSC has provided a detailed syllabus for these papers. There is a total of 6 papers in this exam, among them, 4 are GS papers. But unlike UPSC the nature of GS papers is multiple choice type. But English and Marathi language Paper – 1 is subjective (essay type) while English and Marathi language Paper – 2 is MCQ based. There is a 1/4 negative marking system for all the GS papers. The scope of General Studies has been expanded. In every single paper, the qualifying marks for open category candidates are 45 whereas for reserved category candidates it is 40.
