There are major changes in the Preliminary exam since 2013. Now there are 2 papers for the Preliminary exam-

GS paper contains 100 questions and CSAT paper contains 80 questions of multiple choice type. The time allotted is two hours for each paper. For both, the papers 1/4 negative marking system is applicable, which means a deduction of 25% marks for each wrong answer.

All other rules regarding this are same as UPSC. Questions are set in English and Marathi medium but for some passages in CSAT paper and questions based on them which are supposed to test candidates’ knowledge of the Marathi language, the English translation is not available and vice a versa.

The Preliminary Examination is held at most of the district places in Maharashtra.The authorities release the MPSC answer key for Prelims soon after the exam. After the result of the Preliminary Examination is declared, the successful candidates are called to appear for the Main Examination. Marks scored in the Preliminary Examination are not counted for the final selection of the candidates.

MPSC Prelims Syllabus

  • History of India (specifically Maharashtra) and Indian National Movement.
  • India, Maharashtra and world geography – Physical, Social, The economic geography of Maharashtra, India, and the World.
  • General issues on Environmental Biodiversity, Ecology, and Climate Change.
  • Polity and Governance (Maharashtra and India) – Constitution, Urban Governance, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issue, etc.
  • Current events of state, national, and international importance.
  • General Science
  • Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Inclusion, Poverty, Social Sector Initiatives, Demographics, etc.
  • Comprehension
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • Decision-making and problem-solving
  • General mental ability
  • Interpersonal skills, including communication skills
  • Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data Interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc. – Class X level)
  • Marathi and English language comprehension skills (Class X/XII level) Questions relating to this will be tested through passages from Marathi and the English language without providing cross translation thereof in the question paper
